Reaction to Powell Localism Plan So Far

As one might expect, reaction to the media localism initiatives announced by FCC Chairman Michael Powell was mixed. Commissioner Michael Copps, who along with fellow Democratic Commissioner Jonathan Adelstein, held hearings media concentration and advocated holding more, dismissed the initiatives as too little and too late.
“We now hear that there may localism issues after all. But what’s going to happen while we study localism over the next year? The answer is: deals, deals and more deals.”
A spokesman for the Consumer Federation of America said: “The FCC’s suggestion that it will further study the issue of media concentration, without staying its June 2 rules, is an insult to those of us who suggested in the record that the commission had not done its homework. The appropriate time for study is before he rules are issued, not afterwards.”
