Reporters’ Guide to HIPAA Regs Available

Reporters' Guide to HIPAA Regs Available

The Radio-Television News Directors Association offers a guide to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act aimed at journalists. The guide provides information about journalists’ rights under the act.
Since HIPAA took effect, the association said, reporters are, at times, being denied access to medical information by emergency medical personnel and medical workers.
While the regulations limit the ability of sources to discuss medical information, the rule also is being used to prevent the disclosure of newsworthy information, according to the group. The guide is intended to help journalists educate their sources and operate within HIPAA requirements.
The guide is available on the RTNDA Web site: www.rtnda.org/foi/hipaafaq.shtml.
