One of the Studer J37 Multi-Track Recorders used in the recording of the “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” album will be shown at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and Museum.
The J37 recorder will on loan from Studer’s museum; it will be included in the renovated Beatles exhibit scheduled to reopen this month.
The pair of recorders used on the album were in Studio Two at the EMI Recording Studios in London, now Abbey Road Studios.
Andy Trott, president Soundcraft and Studer, was quoted in the announcement saying, “A few years ago, when I visited one of Studer’s studios in our offices near Zurich in Switzerland, I saw this J37 for the first time and got a thrill at the thought of John, Paul, George and Ringo standing alongside it 40 or so years ago listening to a take of Sgt Pepper’s.”
The album was released on June 1, 1967 in the United Kingdom and in the United States the next day. The J37 went into production in 1964 and was the first four-channel studio-quality tape recorder on the market, Studer said.
