The Radio-Television News Directors Association says a recent indecency ruling by the FCC unconstitutionally limits the ability of broadcast journalists to provide accurate and insightful reporting to the public. The agency reversed itself and decided that singer Bono’s use of the f-word during a live telecast was profane and indecent. RTNDA says the decision has had a chilling effect on broadcast journalism.
“To suggest that coverage of news events be sanitized, as the commission has now done, is in and of itself a form of censorship,” says RTNDA in its request for reconsideration.
