Salem Emphasizes 21% Rise in SOI For Q2

Salem Communications Corp. President/CEO Ed Atsinger III said Salem’s Q2 results “demonstrate a strong and successful performance for the first half of 2003, despite an uncertain economic environment. … This revenue growth, combined with careful cost management, has resulted in a very noteworthy 21% growth in station operating income.”
For the quarter ended June 30, net broadcasting revenue increased 8.4% to $43.4 million from $40.1 million in the same quarter a year ago. The company reported operating income of $8.9 million for the quarter, compared with operating income of $4.4 million for the same quarter last year. The company reported net income of $1.8 million for the quarter, or $0.08 per diluted share, compared with a net loss of $1.6 million, or $0.07 loss per diluted share, for the same quarter last year.
Station operating income increased 20.8% to $15.9 million from $13.2 million in the corresponding 2002 quarter. Station operating income margin increased to 36.7% in the second quarter of 2003 from 32.9% in the second quarter of 2002.
EBITDA increased 70.4% to $11.9 million in the second quarter of 2003 compared to $7.0 million in the same quarter last year. EBITDA for second quarter 2002 includes a one-time $2.3 million legal settlement cost write-off. Excluding the impact of this write-off, Adjusted EBITDA increased 28.3% to $11.9 million from $9.3 million.
