Satcasters Also Think Navigation is Hot Ticket

Sirius and XM downplayed the notion of expected competition from Clear Channel and Audiovox for customers of navigation products. The satcasters both have plans to expand their service to more markets; they’re each in 20 markets. Clear Channel and Audiovox plan to introduce their RDS-based traffic service in 48 markets initially and expand to 90 by year-end.
A Sirius spokesman said to RW Online here on the show floor at CES, “We thought of it first. We think navigation (as a product category) will explode.”
More tidbits about the satcasters’ plans for their NFL and baseball programming emerged in exclusive interviews with RW Online. A Sirius spokesman said the company would carry two feeds of each game, away and local. In those, it may chose to cover local station IDs with its own identifier but other local elements would be left as is.
An XM spokesman said the company has no plans to alter the broadcasts and believed most advertising opportunities would be on the 24-hour original XM baseball channel.
