The bill passed by a Senate committee to restore some media ownership rules includes a provision that could affect cluster owners.
Radio owners actually would be required to divest stations in certain markets where their station “count” goes over the limits, set out in the new radio market definitions. The FCC had not required retroactive spin-offs.
The measure was introduced by Democratic Sens. Fritz Hollings of South Carolina and Ted Stevens of Alaska. The measure now goes to the full Senate, where it faces an uncertain future. Experts believe a companion House bill has a limited chance of success.
