Senate Passes Bill to Raise Indecency Fines

Senate Passes Bill to Raise Indecency Fines

The Senate late Thursday passed a bill to raise broadcast indecency fines from $32,500 to $325,000. Sponsor Sen. Sam Brownback, R-Kansas, said of the action: “Radio and television waves are public property, and the companies who profit from using the public airwaves should face meaningful fines for broadcasting indecent material.”
The measure now goes to the House. S.193 is different from the House-passed indecency bill, which would cap fines at $500,000 per incident, and provides for on-air and other station personnel to be penalized.
Differences in the measures would need to be reconciled in conference committee.
