Sirius Satellite Radio now has 700,000 subscribers and the company says it will reach 1 million by year-end. Competitor XM has 2.5 million listeners.
Sirius passed the 700,000 mark on Oct. 18. It gained about 69,000 customers in September, which marked the start of the Sirius NFL programming package and Sirius College Sports Radio.
“This is indicative of the traction we are seeing in the retail marketplace, and the launch of more factory programs with our automotive partners,” as well as buzz from programming initiatives such as NFL, college sports, Eminem’s ‘Shade 45,’ Maxim Radio and the Howard Stern announcement, stated Sirius President/CEO Joe Clayton.
Sirius says it has approximately $800 million in cash on hand. It launched its service nationwide on July 1, 2002.
