Emmis CEO Jeff Smulyan has picked up an award for his community service commitment. Smulyan has been honored with the American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis’ 1st Annual Fred Heckman Humanitarian Award. Heckman’s radio career at WIBC(AM) began in 1957. He left the station in 1993. Following Emmis’ purchase of the station in 1994, Smulyan got Heckman back on the air in Indianapolis, where Heckman served until his 2000 retirement. He passed away in 2001, with a 40-plus year Red Cross volunteer stint under his belt. The honor was established at the 2002 Hall of Fame to honor Heckman’s Red Cross legacy and his community contributions. The award is presented yearly to a member of the community who exemplifies the ideals of the worldwide Red Cross movement.
