Greater Media President/CEO Peter Smyth said the satcasters are untrustworthy given what he characterized as their history of violating FCC rules, specifically mentioning errant terrestrial repeater locations and overpowered FM modulators.

Karmazin said, although those situations occurred before he came to Sirius, “They shouldn’t have happened.”

The larger issue for Smyth, however, is channel capacity: if Sirius and XM were to combine, they could theoretically broadcast 288 channels into Boston, for example, while Greater Media has five stations in that market.
