Steckline on Hook for Broken Tower Fence

Case involves KIUL in Garden City, Kan.

A $5,600 tower fence fine against Steckline Communications has progressed to a forfeiture.

The Enforcement Bureau originally proposed a $7,000 penalty in 2013 after an FCC agent found a broken fence surrounding the tower for KIUL(AM), Garden City, Kan.

Steckline asked for the fine to be reduced, noting the fence and temporary repairs had been damaged during wind storms and it eventually fixed the tower fence.

The FCC said in its decision it took two months for Steckline to repair the fence and the broadcaster provided no evidence it regularly inspected the structure’s condition. The agency did reduce the fine based on Steckline’s efforts to make temporary fence repairs before the inspection.

Payment is due within 30 days.
