Stevens Eyes 2009 DTV Cut-Off

Senate Commerce Committee Ted Stevens, R-Alaska, told members of the Federal Communications Bar Association this week he intends to introduce a bill on the digital TV transition that is similar to a House draft being circulated.
The legislation may include a hard date for stations to switch to DTV by 2009. He and the committee staff are also looking at options to pay for set-top boxes for consumers who can’t afford to replace their analog sets right away, he said at the FCBA annual meeting on Monday.
A new study by the Consumer Electronics Association says few homes, roughly 12 percent of the 285 million television sets in use in the United States, would be affected by the cut-off.
