STMicroelectronics Develops Multistandard Digital Radio Chip

Company says its technology facilitates tomorrow’s digital car radios at cost comparable to AM/FM solutions

STMicroelectronics has introduced a digital radio chipset that enables simultaneous reception and processing of AM/FM and multiple digital radio broadcasts.

ST’s new digital radio chipset supports the DAB family of standards (DAB/DAB+/DMB-A), Digital Radio Mondiale, as well as HD Radio technology (when combined with an external co-processor.)

Developed with Bosch Car Multimedia, ST says its multistandard digital radio chipset shortcuts the path to cost-effective car infotainment systems — technologies that support synchronized streaming of text and visual information, including real-time weather and traffic updates.

Robert Bosch Car Multimedia GmbH is integrating the ST chip into its head-unit platform because of the chipset’s performance, flexibility and integration benefits, according to company EVP Engineering Dr. Michael Bolle.

ST says its new digital radio chipset can receive and decode up to four channels in parallel, two for FM phase diversity reception and two for terrestrial digital broadcasting. With this feature, the car radio can receive audio content from one channel, while pulling real-time traffic and weather information from another channel at the same time.
