Stu Olds Will Be Honored

Late head of Katz to receive excellence award at Broadcasters Foundation breakfast

Stu Olds will be awarded the Lowry Mays Excellence in Broadcasting Award posthumously at the Broadcasters Foundation of America Breakfast on April 13, at the Wynn Hotel.

He passed away on Dec. 4, 2010 from Myelodysplastic syndrome, a form of leukemia.

Olds had a 30+-year career with Katz, eventually rising to CEO and president of Katz Media Group, a major rep firm owned by Clear Channel. The group includes Katz Radio Group, Clear Channel Radio Sales, Katz Television Group, Katz Marketing Solutions and Katz 360 Digital Sales. He’d worked as vice chairman of the Broadcasters Foundation of America board, honorary trustee of AWRT/Alliance For Women in Media Foundation and a board member of the Radio Advertising Bureau and Bayliss Foundation.

The Mays Award is relatively new. Last year’s recipient, late FCC Commissioner James H. Quello, was the first recipient. It is given to honor an individual “whose work exemplifies innovation, community service, advocacy and entrepreneurship,” according to a release.

The award is underwritten by the Clear Channel Foundation and Wiley Rein LLP. The Broadcasters Foundation is dedicated to aiding broadcast colleagues and their families who have fallen on hard times.
