The U.S. Broadcasting Board of Governors and several other international broadcasters believe jamming of their signals this week is coming from Syria.
The interference has disrupted satellite signals in Europe and the Middle East. “The jamming has hit satellites operated by Eutelsat, a European satellite operator, affecting TV and radio programs reaching millions of households,” according to an announcement from the BBG. It said the jamming started when Eutelsat announced it would terminate transmission of 19 channels belonging to Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting.
The international broadcasters in the organization DG5 criticized the jamming, citing disruption of broadcasts from Russia through Europe, Central Asia and the Middle East. BBG said signals of VOA, RFE/RL and the Middle East Broadcasting Networks were affected. Other members of the DG5 are Audiovisuel Extérieur de la France – France 24, British Broadcasting Corp., Germany’s Deutsche Welle and Radio Netherlands Worldwide.
According to the BBG, an earlier round of jamming this month was traced to Iran.
