House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Billy Tauzin, R-La., Sen. John Breaux, D-La., and other leaders called on the FCC to replace the media ownership rules with new rules that reflect today’s media marketplace.
FCC Chairman Michael Powell has said he wants the new rules out by June. In a letter to Powell, the lawmakers asked that the chairman stick with that schedule.
“Permitting this important proceeding to slip into summer or fall will not make the issues involved any easier to resolve,” they wrote. “It would, however, call into question the ability and willingness of the FCC to adhere to statutory deadlines clearly laid out in the Telecommunications Act of 1996.”
