Technology Sessions at the Radio Show

Track addresses current broadcast issues

The Radio Show, held Sept. 18–20 in Orlando, Fla., features a technology track, which focuses on emergency preparedness, AM radio and efficiency.

“Essential Planning for the Unexpected,” held from 9–10 a.m. Sept. 18, features Howard Price, director of business continuity and crisis management at ABC News, who will cover disaster preparation and go over case studies.

Immediately following, 10:15–11:15 a.m., “Recovering from the Unexpected” panelists Journal Broadcast Group’s Vice President and Chief Technology Officer Andy Laird and Keith Smeal, director of technical operations for Great Media in New Jersey, teaches broadcasters how to do just that through case studies.

Then from 1:15–2:15 p.m., Beasley Broadcast’s Vice President of Engineering and Chief Technology Officer Michael Cooney and CBS Radio Senior Vice President Glynn Walden will examine strategies for “Revitalizing AM Radio.”

“Digging Deeper — Discussing AM Technical Enhancements,” 2:30–3:30 p.m., will then feature a panel consisting of NAB Senior Director of Advanced Engineering David Layer, Hatfield and Dawson’s Senior Engineer Steve Lockwood and du Treil, Lundin and Rackley principal Ronald Rackley.

National Radio Systems Committee meetings will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:30 pm. on Sept. 19. They are open to all interested attendees and focus on technology applications and implementation.

“Efficiencies and Cost Savings” consists of two sessions explaining how tech can offer savings. From 9–10:15 a.m., Nautel’s Eastern Region Sales Manager Gary Liebisch will teach attendees how to “Slash Your AM Transmitter Power Bill.” Cumulus Media Senior Vice President of Engineering and IT Gary Kline and Great Media-Boston Director of Technical Operations Paul Shulins will also explain “Simple Flexible Studio Design Using AoIP.”
