John Lee Smith is dead, according to the Star-Telegram. The former radio engineer was 80.
According to an online obituary, the Texas native was chief engineer of top 40 AM station KFJZ for 33 years, and helped develop the Texas State Radio Network for news. He was among the technicians to start KFJZ(TV).
“For many years, he innovated and produced the original ‘fast-paced’ Green Valley Raceway-style radio commercials, which became the hallmark for the industry,” the obituary reported. He later worked for Thomas Electronics and also was a theater projectionist in Fort Worth.
