Thales Wins Shortwave Contract With China

Thales Broadcast & Multimedia said it was selected to provide 13 more shortwave transmitters and a rotatable antenna broadcasting system to China. The company said the Administrative Bureau of Radio Stations and China Radio and TV Co. issued the contract.
Following the commissioning of two 500 kW short-wave transmitters type TSW 2500 ordered in December 2001, the supplier stated, “ABRS has now contracted Thales for the delivery of a total of 13 high-power transmitters of the same power class, bringing the total number of Thales 500 kW SW transmitters installed in China up to 19 units.” Delivery is to be made this year.
In making the announcement, Thales also acknowledged that the international broadcasting marketplace is changing with the expected advent of the Digital Radio Mondiale AM system. A company official said, “This historical contract documents the importance of shortwave for major nations in times of increasing needs in terms of global communications. Leaders at ABRS have confirmed their belief in the future of shortwave broadcasting.”
