Thanksgiving always brings out an extra push for the needy for broadcasters. The December Licensed to Serve has the details.
John DeBella of Greater Media’s WMGK(FM) in Philadelphia, playing off the legendary “WKRP in Cincinnati” “Turkey Drop,” collected almost 9,500 turkeys in his 12th Annual John DeBella Turkey Drop. Station staffers at 10 locations throughout the city did the heavy lifting. The turkeys went to Cityteam Philadelphia for holiday meals.
In other turkey news, Entercom Buffalo, working with the Buffalo Sabres hockey team, collected 1,700 turkeys for their drive.
WHUR(FM), licensed to Howard University in Washington, raised over $100,000 and stuffed a trailer full of food in the 36th annual Food2Feed radiothon.
The Hunger to Hope radiothon in Nashville, hosted by Cumulus Media’s WWTN(FM) raised over $110,000 for the Nashville Rescue Mission.
Meanwhile, Saga Communications’ WNOR(FM) and WAFX(FM) hosted the 17th annual, three-day Mayflower Marathon Food Drive collected 577,678 meals plus cash for two local food banks. Saga’s WKNE(FM) in Keene, N.H. and Clear Channel’s WGIR(FM) in, Manchester, N.H., and WHEB(FM) in Portsmouth, N.H., combined for the 23rd annual Lend a Helping Can radiothon. Over two days $82,000 was raised.
In Martin, Tenn., Thunderbolt Broadcasting’s WCMT(AM/FM) held a radiothon for the St. John’s Development Services Center, an organization that helps special needs adults. The radiothon ultimately raised more than $20,000.
