The 45 Turns 60 This Month

March 31 is the credited day for a seminal event in audio media (and radio) development

Music and vinyl buffs are noting the approaching 60th anniversary of the 45.

The first 45 rpm disc, “Texarkana Baby” by country singer Eddy Arnold, was issued by RCA on March 31, 1949.

The BBC covered the evolution of the 45, and its current place in our audio culture, in a story earlier this winter. Guardian music columnist Owen Adams reflected on the anniversary this week.

And for some fun historical reading (what did Walter Winchell have to say about the outlook for the 45?), check out by Norm Katuna’s detailed newsgroup post on this topic, noting the same anniversary 11 years ago.
