Time-Alignment Utility Offered

Engineer Brian Beezley has updated his time alignment utility for HD Radio and is offering it (for free) to anyone who’s interested.

Engineer Brian Beezley has updated his time alignment utility for HD Radio and is offering it (for free) to anyone who’s interested.

Beezley is a retired software and circuit designer with an interest in IBOC. As reported in RW Newsbytes from the CGC Communicator earlier, he developed a DOS program that station engineers can use to time-align their analog and digital signals.

Using five seconds of audio, the program calculates the delay between the transmitted analog and digital signal so they can be adjusted.

“It can tell you how many microseconds you’re off,” he tells me. The program takes a measurement about every one-third of a second.

The blend on several stations he measured in southern California was off by several milliseconds; the only way the blend-to-analog feature of IBOC can be transparent is if the blend is “well under a millisecond,” he said.
