Tradition Moves on in Chicago

Last Cubs game on WGN(AM) has aired

It passed with little notoriety outside of the Windy City — the last Chicago Cubs game has aired on WGN(AM).

A relationship almost as old as radio itself, and easily the longest-running team/broadcaster pairing in major league sports, the Cubs and the radio station agreed to part ways this summer. Of course, it was all about money (and ratings), along with that newfangled thing, “multiplatform” exposure. The Cubonomics just aren’t what they used to be.

The Cubbies are joining “da Bears” over on CBS Radio’s top-rated WBBM(AM) newser (which is increasingly a sportser). Here’s the plain-Jane story from the Tribune and here’s an article that seems to be a good roundup.

The Trib’s Ed Sherman had a few things to say on Friday, as did the fan site, Bleed Cubbie Blue.

Finally, here’s possibly the last word, from WGN(AM) on Sunday after the last game — including some historical radio clips.
