TV, Radio Lead Time Spent With Media, Nielsen Finds

Cross-platform report also shows smartphone users spent a lot of time with mobile apps

Radio is second only to television in the average adult consumers time spent with media, according to Nielsen in its latest cross-platform report.

Among adults age 18 and over, the average time spent with live television was five hours and four minutes per day and 2 hours 46 minutes spent with AM/FM radio. That compares to five hours and 10 minutes spent watching live TV in the fourth quarter of 2012 and two hours and 50 minutes spent listening to AM/FM radio.

Thirty-two minutes was the average time spent watching time-shifted TV in in Q4 2013, followed by one hour and seven minutes using a smartphone, one hour and one minute using the Internet on a computer, 12 minutes using a game console and nine minutes using a DVD or Blu-ray device. 

Nielsen also said the findings show smartphone users spent 89% of their mobile media time using mobile apps in the fourth quarter of 2013.
