U. Texas Abandons Sports Flagship Station

Local radio network takes over broadcasts

The University of Texas at Austin has one of the larger and more lucrative football and basketball sports broadcast packages.

KVET(AM), an iHeartMedia property, has long held the rights, but it has been supplanted by a locally grown network, the Austin Radio Network.

The Austin Radio Network has a sports talk station, KTXX(FM)/The Horn (as in Longhorn), along with HD channels and translators along with country KOKE(FM) and comedy KLGO(AM). The University’s programming will be aired in one part or another on all the properties. KTXX will be the new Longhorn flagship station.

Also included in the deal will be Spanish-language broadcasts on KXNZ(AM) and an HD2/Fiesta 97.1.
