USADR, LDR to Merge

USADR, LDR to Merge

As Radio World Online reported previously, USA Digital Radio and Lucent Digital Radio intend to combine both companies in order to develop a single standard for in-band, on-channel digital audio broadcasting.
The new company will be called iBiquity Digital Corporation and would have two headquarters, in Columbia, Md. and Warren, N.J. The deal is expected to close within 60 days.
Executives of both companies hoped the move would signal to equipment manufacturers the need to commit resources to IBOC DAB.
The combined entity will be backed by Lucent Technologies and 15 of the nation’s top 20 radio broadcasters.
The details of how to combine the two systems have yet to be worked out except for one major decision. iBiquity will use Lucent’s audio compression technology, PAC.
Executives of LDR and USADR still hope to develop a single IBOC standard by the end of the year, and project there would be IBOC-compatible equipment in the marketplace in 2001.
