WAWZ’s S. Rea Crawford Passes Away

Seven-decades at one station and more

WAWZ(FM) patriarch Rev. S. Rea Crawford passed away on Friday. He was 86.

Crawford was well-known in religious broadcasting circles. He led WAWZ in Zarephath, N.J., to numerous awards including an NAB Crystal Radio Award and being named Station of the Year three times by the National Religious Broadcasters.

Personally he was also honored by the NRB for his (then) six decades of service. According to a release, he started with the station “three months before Pearl Harbor” and he worked until he retired in 2013. He was GM for 40 years.

He was also inducted into the New Jersey Broadcasters Hall of Fame.

Ken Deutsch wrote on Crawford for Radio World in “Rea Crawford Hits a Milestone.”
