WGBH Acquires PRI

Says Minneapolis-based public radio program producer/distributor will operate independently

Public programming producer WGBH Boston has acquired Public Radio International.

The companies say public radio program producer and distributor PRI will be an affiliated company of WGBH yet continue to operate independently as a nonprofit organization based in Minneapolis.

Financial terms were not disclosed.

“Recognizing the tremendous changes and opportunities occurring in media,” the companies say they are responding “to the imperative for public media to find new and innovative ways to work more effectively to serve the public.”

WGBH produces content for radio, TV and the web. The companies say they will “pursue a shared vision for developing and funding” programming and that WGBH will provide administrative operations to support PRI.

PRI and WGBH have worked together for 16 years to produce the daily international news program “PRI’s The World” and “The Takeway.” The latter is co-produced by WNYC Radio and PRI, in collaboration with the BBC World Service, New York Times Radio and WGBH Boston.

A public radio program producer and distributor for more than 28 years, PRI’s programming is aired on nearly 900 radio stations and on digital platforms as well.

PRI will continue to produce “Studio 360” with WNYC as well as shows like “Here & Now,” “Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know,” “The Tavis Smiley Show” and “This American Life.”
