WHAV’s Big Plans

LPFM applicant fires up news division

WHAV, an Internet station and an LPFM applicant in Haverhill, Mass., has announced that it has launched its “hyperlocal” news division.

It has hired a news director and built a newsroom. The newsroom is dedicated to Edwin V. Johnson, the long-time news director for WHAV, a legacy AM/FM that dated back to 1947 for the AM. The FM was an early FM dating back to 1948 (it was initially planned in the pre-war FM band at 46.5 MHz). The FM was peeled off in the 1980s and changed call letters several times. The original WHAV disappeared with a change in call letters in 2002.

Haverhill currently does not have a radio station licensed to it. Obviously, should the LPFM application be approved, this group could hit the ground running.
