WMUB Goes HD3 With BBC

Non-commercial WMUB(FM) in Oxford, Ohio, turned on that station’s HD3 channel this week. Jim Keen is chief engineer.
Station officials believe it’s the first Ohio station to “triplecast.” Program Director John Hingsbergen says the new HD-3 is a BBC World Service format. He tells RW Online the Miami University licensee is also considering providing long-form coverage of special events such as congressional hearings on the third channel.
The station is operating in the “extended hybrid mode” with bit rates of approximately 64, 31 and 22 kbps, respectively.
“We’re using separate AudioVault workstations to operate each channel but trying to keep maintenance and updating to a minimum until we know there are listeners,” said Hingsbergen.
The HD2 channel, on the air since June of 2005, is 24-hour jazz. News/talk and jazz-formatted WMUB main went IBOC on March 15, 2005.
