New York’s WNYC(FM) is launching a full-time streaming channel on Nov. 1, The Jonathan Channel.
And what is The Jonathan Channel? It is dedicated to WNYC’s Jonathan Schwartz, a 50-year broadcast vet and promoter of the “American Songbook.”
Schwartz said, “I deeply believe that 500 years from now people will be listening to Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, and the music and lyrics created by, among others, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Richard Rodgers, Jerome Kern, Jimmy Van Heusen and my own father, Arthur Schwartz.”
The channel will feature Schwartz and his programs. It will also be programmed by him for full-time 24/7 operation.
Schwartz added, “To me there is no greater music than American standards. It transcends cultures and generations. And now I’m pleased that we will transcend time and space by offering access to this music 24 hours a day, anywhere, if you have internet access.”
The feed will have its own address but will also be accessible from WNYC’s website and app along with iHeartRadio and TuneIn. Schwartz will continue with his regular WNYC weekend programs.
