World Radio Switzerland Is for Sale

English-language station not part of future plans

Public broadcaster SRG SSR is selling World Radio Switzerland.

The Swiss broadcaster announced the decision this week, after its Director General Roger de Weck said in April that “English-language services were no longer a priority for SRG SSR.”

SRG SSR bought the private station World Radio Geneva five years ago and renamed it World Radio Switzerland. WRS today employs some 20 people and broadcasts on FM, DAB cable and satellite. The decision to sell WRS came after an online campaign to save the station gathered around 4,000 signatures.

SRG SSR said it hopes to complete the initiative by the end of the year with a deadline to sell the station by 2013 or 2014.
