WorldSpace Will Turn Off a Beam; Move Affects Parts of Europe and Africa

Saying it needs to upgrade technology and content in preparation for mobile services, satellite company WorldSpace said subscription service on its Afristar North-West Beam will be discontinued in December.

Some 60 countries are affected including France, Spain, Portugal, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Egypt, Libya, Liberia, Morocco, Congo, Sierra Leone and others.

The company told customers in an online announcement that the move will help it provide better satellite service in Europe and Northern Africa. It has stopped selling subscriptions in the North-West beam and didn’t say when it would resume. It is offering current paying European and Northern African subscribers free subscription service renewals through Nov. 30.
