WWVA Towers Collapse

Thunderstorm knocks three-tower array to the ground

WWVA(AM) in Wheeling W.Va., lost all three towers during a severe thunderstorm.

The Wednesday storm knocked the entire three-tower phased array for the 50,000 watt AM to the ground. The array is in St. Clairsville, Ohio. Studios for the talk-formatted Clear Channel station, known as “The Big One,” are in Wheeling.

WWVA on 1170 kHz was off the air as of mid-Thursday afternoon. “Our engineering crews are on site now working to get some temporary towers in place as soon as possible, so we can return the programming to the 1170 signal,” it stated on its website.

Chad Tyson of sister station WEGW(FM) posted numerous images of the scene, one of which is shown here. He also posted this video walkthrough.

In the meantime, WWVA said its programming can still be heard on the 1400 kHz signal of its sister station WBBD(AM), Wheeling, W.Va., which normally plays Adult Standards.
