XM, Baron Services to Develop Weather Tracking Capability For Mobile Markets

XM Satellite Radio and Baron Services are joining forces to develop advanced weather capability to deliver near real-time, detailed, graphical weather services to mobile markets including marine, aviation and ground applications. Baron Services provides Doppler Weather Radar and Storm Cell Identification & Tracking technology to the TV broadcast and emergency management industries.
XM VP Technology Dr. Stell Patsiokas, said, “This advanced weather capability will complement XM’s service, providing subscribers with a unique package of weather and entertainment wherever they travel nationwide.” Baron says its proprietary developments in data distribution would allow efficient transmission of weather data over XM’s satellite system. The data-only weather service will be available directly from XM, and subscribers will be able to receive the XM audio service using the same antenna if they buy both the data-only and audio service. Commercial launch of these services is expected within the next 12 months.
