XM Satellite Radio plans to send the first of two satellites up in space Jan. 8. Its first satellite is due to arrive Saturday at Sea Launch’s home port in Long Beach, California. Sea Launch will send the Boeing 702 satellites into orbit from a floating launch platform near the equator. The second satellite is slated to go up later in the first quarter of the New Year.
XM President/CEO Hugh Panero said the company has its chipset design completed and is finalizing production plans for AM/FM/XM receivers with Sony, Alpine, Pioneer and other manufacturers.
