Xperi Survey Crowns AM, FM Radio as Most Used In-Car Feature

The HD Radio developer releases a graphic highlighting its findings

AM/FM radio still rules the vehicle interior, according to new consumer data from Xperi and its subsidary DTS. Survey data from more than 2,900 U.S. car owners and leasers indicates that radio is still the number one entertainment choice for music, which most users consider to be “essential” to their driving experience, said Xperi.

“AM/FM radio is also where most go for their second most popular in-vehicle entertainment choice: local news and information,” said the HD Radio developer.

Xperi says AM/FM radio “far outpaces” satellite radio and Apple CarPlay, with 72 percent of respondents using AM/FM radio versus 14% using Apple CarPlay.

Of those who listen to audio in the car, survey results show that 81 percent of respondents said music is primarily what they listen to. The company said 70 percent of those listeners source their music from AM/FM radio.

Xperi executives will be at the NAB Show later this week with more information on this data, and to offer demos of the company’s connected car radio technologies, including DTS AutoStage.
