Yes, the CAP Clock Has Started

Commission is aware of desire for extension

RW reported last week that the 180-day deadline for broadcasters to comply with the updated Common Alerting Protocol standard had begun ticking.

Some in the alerting community have since said they believe the FCC has not yet started the clock. So we asked.

“The clock has officially started (as of Sept. 30),” commission spokesman Robert Kenny confirmed for RW.

“We are [aware of] comments that were submitted by broadcasters and the public requesting an extension of the 180-day compliance deadline and we are considering those comments,” he continued. “I cannot speculate on how we will proceed at this time, but this is something that we are focused on and expect to make a decision in the near future.”
