You Gotta Believe

Vegas 'Sure Bets': 'Believe'

One in a recurring series of tips about fun things to do while you’re at the NAB Show.

For early arrivals only:

Illusionist Criss Angel’s favorite movie is “The Wizard of Oz.” So perhaps it’s no surprise that the goal with his new show at the Luxor, “Believe,” was to transport the audience into another dimension.

Note the style of the name with the letters “l-i-e” in bold. Unlike his popular show on A&E, “Criss Angel—Mindfreak,” in which he works his magic for both celebrities and passersby on the street, “Believe” partners the illusionist with the surrealistic performance art/dance troupe Cirque du Soleil for a show it describes as transcending “any preconceived notion of what it means to be emotionally engaged by the arts of mysticism and illusion.”

Angel stars as a Victorian nobleman on a “path of imaginative exploration” when he encounters two women representing different aspects of femininity and four bizarre “Ushers,” who introduce the audience to the characters’ and dancers’ “high-energy visual feast.” Cirque du Soleil says Angel’s illusions are not presented as standalone elements like a traditional magic show but rather are woven into the plot of the story.

But the show is dark April 11–17, so this tip applies to early convention arrivals only. Tickets range $59–$160. Book online through Ticketmaster, or by phone at (702) 262-4400 or (800) 557-7428.
