The Wide World of Information

The visual, the audible and the inventive

This edition of Off the Beaten Path is once again a collection of miscellaneous websites that I’ve stumbled upon through friends, readers, “net surfing” and social media posts.

As I go to these links, I think about how much things have changed and how easy access is to everything from history to science compared to when I was a kid. As a kid, I’d go to the library and dig through books looking for anything related to broadcasting and science. In a fairly small town of 12,000 people our single public library was fine, but my own interests didn’t really jibe with what the library had available. Now I look at everything available and easy it is to find and wonder how it impacts today’s kids and their own interests.

Audio Archives — WWII
The fortunate aspect of our own industry is that whether it was TV with kinescopes or radio with transcriptions, recording our own industry history has been relatively easy. Unfortunately, we don’t always protect or save those recordings. From archive.org comes the complete NBC radio broadcast history of D-Day. It’s an amazing look back at both how we presented critical news, but also a critical point in world history.

Time-Lapse to Build a Studio
Here’s a fun link on how the Capital FM’s studio in U.K. was built. It’s a great time-lapse of the construction.

More Voice-Over Info
Recently I offered information about voice-over websites and received an email with another link. Howard Ellison in the U.K. is a voice-over artist who suggests Voice Over Bodyshop’s weekly live podcast by Dan Lenard and George Whittam.

Howard’s own website for voice-over work is here.

Simple Inventions Mean a Lot
I stumbled across this website which displays a new product to help people. There are numerous reasons individuals have tremors and their hands shake. When I saw this invention, I was happy to see it knowing how many people it could help.

And finally …
Ever watch a movie and think “that place looks familiar”? Well, there might be a reason. Here are nine iconic film locations.

If you stumble across a good or unusual web site that might be of interest, please don’t hesitate to send me the link and any info you might have about it. My email address is dan_slentz@yahoo.com.
