Radio via ATSC 3 … hybrid radio platforms … higher HD Radio power levels … generative AI … These are among topics to be featured at this year’s NAB Show Broadcast Engineering and IT Conference.

The BEITC schedule has been posted. The conference starts on the show’s Saturday morning at 10 and concludes on Tuesday. Sessions will now be held in the West Hall, which the show organizers have named the Broadcast District this year.

Among the highlights of the engineering conference:

-A Sunday morning session will explore “Broadcasters and Hybrid Radio,” with the theme “it’s all about the metadata.” This session will be held in conjunction with the North American Broadcasters Association and will include speakers from Xperi, RadioDNS and Edison Research.

-Also on Sunday, David Layer of NAB will discuss results of testing that support the NAB/Xperi petition asking the FCC to allow higher HD Radio power levels by updating the commission’s current formula.

-Shortly after that, Dave Kolesar of Hubbard and Paul Peyla of Xperi will discuss HD Radio advanced FM service modes, including results of Kolesar’s field trials on WTLP(FM) in Braddock Heights, Md.

-Also Sunday, Liam Power of ONE Media will present a proof of concept about radio over ATSC 3.0. “There are other tools in the ATSC 3 standard that enable broadcasters to bring new value-added services to their viewers,” according to the session summary. “In this paper, we will explore some key capabilities leveraged for our Radio over ATSC 3 proof of concept project. More specifically, we will explore the ‘UserDefined’ capability of A/331, ‘Link Mapping Table’ in A/330 and NRT services for delivering radio services.”

-At least two sessions will explore aspects of artificial intelligence. A Monday talk by Naveen Narayanan of Quickplay will show early applications of generative AI in broadcasting and streaming, including creation of AI-generated images. And on Tuesday, Tony Peterle of WorldCast Systems will talk about the company’s use of AI to reduce energy consumption in FM transmission systems.

The full agenda is on the NAB Show site.

As we reported earlier, the SBE Ennes Workshop will now be held separately on the Friday and Saturday leading into the show, with its own registration.
