A software application promises to help stations reach audiences instantly using text messaging with information people want, such as school closings, severe weather or breaking news.

It is also a way to generate new ad revenue while increasing traffic to broadcasts and Web site.

Textcaster is a Web-based software application that can be customized. The product allows permission-based text message delivery to cell phones, PDAs and pagers on some 65 carriers.

The manufacturer says TextCaster is accessed securely by personnel from an Internet-connected computer. Features include optional support for e-mail and short code opt-in.

Stations can use the product to target subscribers to specific five-digit Zip codes and interact with listeners for polls, contests and surveys.

A Spanish version is available.
