Audio-Technica has launched a new, high-end studio microphone, the AT5040.

In other Audio-Technica news, the company announced that Hiroshi Akino, Audio-Technica Corp., Japan, Jackie Green, VP R&D/Engineering and Tadashi Kikutani, research and development engineering manager of Audio-Technica U.S. along with Hirofumi Shimokawa, Kanagawa Institute of Technology, Japan, had received a best paper award at the recent AES show in San Francisco.

The paper was titled “On the Study of Ionic Microphones” and had to do with a “diaphragm-less” ionic plasma microphone technology.

The microphone is a side-address, cardioid pattern, large-diaphragm condenser aimed at vocal duties. The “large diaphragm” actually consists of an array of four diaphragms working as a single unit. An internal shockmount keeps things stable.

The AT5040 ships with AT’s new AT8480 external shockmount.
