With new royalty rates taking affect for small station owners and webcasters, Backbone Networks sees the new rates “requiring them to make expensive royalty payments on each song ‘performance.’” It adds, “As the new rates hinder terrestrial stations that stream music, and as music services like Pandora and Spotify continue to gain online market share, there is expected to be even more emphasis placed on stations building audiences through royalty-free programming, such as sports, news and talk radio.”
It sees an opportunity and therefore it offering products and services to help out those ’casters looking to talk-oriented material. By using Backbone’s cloud-based system, “stations can create and expand their live talk presence, both on-air and via second-channel streaming, using agile cloud software instead of expensive electronics.”
At the company’s NAB Show booth, on display will be Backbone Talk, a multiple-line call-in broadcast phone system that travels on remotes; Backbone Co-Host, for studio-quality distributed/remote production, guests and roving correspondents and it is integrated with new Luci Global app for iPhone, iPad and PCs; and its Backbone Radio turn-key suite for radio production for live and automated broadcasts from anywhere.
The company is also soliciting former Live365 clients for a special service it calls AfterLive.
