NAB Sneak Peek: Belar Automated Channel Scanning Comes to FMCS-1

New feature allows for monitoring multiple stations with a single unit

Belar Electronics says that it is adding Automated Channel Scanning to its FMCS-1 modulation monitor.

A release explained: “Automated Channel Scanning was created based on a need to simplify on-air compliance and quality monitoring in consolidated RF facilities. The automatic scan function cycles through up to six presets, making it perfect for networks operating multiple stations in a single market.”

It adds, “The extension of this software function to the FMCS-1 brings tremendous value to broadcasters who want to monitor multiple FM signals, or a mix of FM and HD Radio signals. Belar’s software-defined architecture allows existing FMCS-1 customers to incorporate Automated Channel Scanning in the field.”

Belar Electronics CEO Mark Grant said, “Whether monitoring FM, HD or a hybrid across several stations, Automated Channel Scanning removes the need for separate units for each station, simplifying how engineers can receive, review and react to signal compliance and performance readings. … It is another way Belar is at once reducing multiple station costs while delivering more benefits to the broadcaster.”

Also at the 2016 NAB Show, Belar will demonstrate Automatic Delay Correction software applications including Time Window Expansion and Delay Ramping.

Time Window Expansion expands the time window by up to eight times, and leverages an “auto range mode” to track the delay and open the correction window if the delay drifts outside the allotted range. Sample resolutions are automatically increased or decreased to pull the delay back within the window.

Delay Ramping is a gradual ramping feature for broadcasters correcting HD Diversity Delay with an audio processor. It drives smoother transitions between time adjustments, eliminating the perceptible jump that listeners experience as the broadcast shifts between analog and HD.
