A new application from an online weather service company may help. It provides iPhone users access to streaming Internet radio stations using RadioTime’s guide.

Weather Underground has rolled out its WunderRadio application, which costs $5.99; it uses an iPhone’s GPS capability to locate nearby radio stations including NOAA weather radio streams.

Company officials said the original goal was to provide iPhone users with access to local weather radio streams but that during development, they decided to extend the scope of stations by working with RadioTime, an online “tuner” that connects Internet services and devices to content from traditional radio stations.

RW profiled RadioTime earlier this year.

WunderRadio provides links to the Web site of the station the user is listening to as well as information on songs that are playing. The application features Internet radio stations that are streamed by Windows Media and MP3 formats.

CEO Bill Moore of RadioTime said the application lets iPhone users explore radio content that online streaming music services don’t provide.

The application also allows users to access radio scanners to pick up local police, fire and EMS agencies.
