NPR has upped or added its presence on several Apple devices as the pubcaster moves forward with a “news everywhere” strategy, Chief Digital Officer Thomas Hjelm wrote in a blog this week. He explained, “We come from everywhere; we want to be everywhere.”
Apple’s new HomePod smartspeaker will feature a vocal command to “tune to NPR,” as demonstrated at WWDC 2017; HomePod will be available in December. Amazon Alexa and Google Home already have skills/commands that enable users to listen to NPR programming and stations.
Additionally, NPR One is now available on Apple TV. The app is already offered for Chromecast and FireTV. It can also be accessed via Bluetooth and Airplay.
Hjelm also announced that NPR is rebranding its digital news update (Hourly News Summary) to “NPR News Now.” Listeners can access this content on demand via podcasts, NPR One as well as on Twittter at @NPRNewsNow.
“Extending NPR’s reach, relevance and accessibility is essential,” Hjelm wrote.
NPR One also has a presence in many connected cars and 97% of smartphones.
