10-Watt Transmitter Gets AM Station Back on the Air

Rental unit from Information Station Specialists helps restore partial coverage

From our Who’s Buying What page: Powell Broadcasting in Iowa recently deployed a 10-watt rental transmitter from Information Station Services to get KLEM(AM) back on the air after severe flooding hit the region.

Powell’s General Manager Dennis Bullock told ISS that the station’s transmitter site had been flooded. The manufacturer shipped a TR6000 transmitter overnight for Saturday delivery.

“We quickly got it mounted in the rack and were broadcasting.  The coverage in all directions exceeded our expectations, a good signal for nearly 25 miles,” Bullock told Information Station Specialists in an email. “There were high-fives all around when 1410 AM came back to life.”

KLEM in Le Mars, Iowa, normally is 1 kW by day and 50 watts at night. It also has an FM translator.

The rental transmitter is visible at the top of the rack at right.

Photos of the flooding earlier this summer are posted on the station’s website.
