They like to call them “Commentator Units” in England. It’s an equipment format not seen in the U.S., but perhaps it should be seen.
As an example, Sonifex has introduced a commentator unit, the CM-CU1. It’s a small single-mic input mixer for remote duties designed for small crews or single-operator operation. It has four input channels and four talkback outputs (and ganging controls). It also has multiple monitoring options.
There is a rear-panel program/effects input and a front-panel line input but this mixer isn’t designed for multichannel spectacles.
Other features include 48V phantom power, a built-in limiter, test tone generator and on-air security lock along with an LED bargraph. The whole package is housed in a metal case.
While most U.S. sports broadcasts involve two on-air talents, news remotes and traffic reporters might take a look at the CM-CU1.
